Sapienza University of Rome (Sapienza – Università di Roma) is a public research university founded in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII. It is one of the oldest universities in the world and, by enrolment, one of the largest in Europe.
Its main campus, the Città Universitaria near Termini station, was designed in the 1930s and houses many faculties, with other sites across Rome and in Latina. Sapienza's faculties cover architecture, economics, pharmacy and medicine, law, engineering (including civil, industrial, information and aerospace engineering), humanities, philosophy, mathematics, physics and natural sciences, political science, sociology and communication, and psychology. Physicists including Enrico Fermi worked there.
Teaching is mainly in Italian, with an expanding range of English-taught bachelor's and master's degrees. Admission varies by programme and may include entrance tests. Tuition is income-based for students submitting ISEE documentation, and regional Lazio DiSCo grants and housing are available.
