The University of Bologna (Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna) is a public research university in Bologna, Italy. Its traditional founding date of 1088 makes it widely regarded as the oldest university in continuous operation in the world, and the term universitas was first used there for an association of students.
Today it is one of Italy's largest universities, organised as a multi-campus institution with sites in Bologna, Cesena, Forlì, Ravenna and Rimini, as well as a presence in Buenos Aires.
