The University of Zurich (UZH) is a public research university in Zurich, Switzerland. Founded in 1833 by the canton of Zurich, it was the first university in Europe to be established by a democratic state rather than a monarch or church, and it is Switzerland's largest university.
UZH has seven faculties: theology and the study of religion, law, business, economics and informatics, medicine, veterinary medicine (Vetsuisse), arts and social sciences, and science. Its main building sits beside ETH Zurich in the city centre, with a large science campus at Irchel. Albert Einstein received his doctorate from UZH, and many Nobel laureates have been associated with it.
Bachelor's programmes are mainly taught in German, while many master's programmes are in English. Tuition fees are low by international standards.
