The National Autonomous University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, UNAM) is a public research university headquartered in Mexico City. Its modern form dates from 1910, with roots in the Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico founded in 1551, and it gained autonomy in 1929. It is the largest university in Mexico and one of the largest in the Americas.
The central campus, Ciudad Universitaria in Coyoacán, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007 for its mid-20th-century architecture and murals, including the Central Library. UNAM also runs faculties and schools across the metropolitan area, research institutes, the National Astronomical Observatory and a system of affiliated high schools.
It offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes in the sciences, engineering, medicine, law, economics, social sciences, humanities and the arts. Teaching is in Spanish. Undergraduate entry is through UNAM's competitive admission exam or its high-school pass system, and tuition for Mexican students is nominal.
