The University of Tokyo (UTokyo) is a national research university in Tokyo, founded in 1877 as Japan's first imperial university. It is widely regarded as Japan's most prestigious university.

Its main Hongo campus, with the landmark Akamon red gate, is complemented by the Komaba campus, where first- and second-year undergraduates study liberal arts, and the Kashiwa research campus. Faculties cover law, medicine, engineering, letters, science, agriculture, economics, arts and sciences, education and pharmaceutical sciences. Many Japanese prime ministers and several Nobel laureates studied there.

Most undergraduate teaching is in Japanese, though English-taught degree programmes exist, including PEAK. Graduate programmes in English are widely available, and MEXT and university scholarships support international students.
