Semmelweis University is a public medical and health sciences university in Budapest. Its origins lie in the medical faculty founded in 1769, and it is named after Ignác Semmelweis, the 19th-century physician who pioneered antiseptic procedures in obstetrics.
The university has faculties of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, health sciences, health and public administration, and physical education and sport sciences, together with a doctoral school and large clinical centres that make it one of Hungary's biggest healthcare providers.
Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy are taught in Hungarian, English and German, attracting many international students, particularly from Europe and the Middle East. Admission for international students involves an entrance examination in biology and chemistry, and English and German programmes charge tuition fees.
