Heidelberg University (Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg) is a public research university in Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg. Founded in 1386 by Elector Palatine Rupert I, it is the oldest university in present-day Germany.
Its facilities are spread between the historic Old Town (Altstadt), Bergheim and the Neuenheimer Feld science campus, where the university hospital and many life science institutes are located alongside independent research centres such as the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). Heidelberg's twelve faculties cover theology, law, medicine (Heidelberg and Mannheim), philosophy, modern languages, economics and social sciences, behavioural and cultural studies, mathematics and computer science, chemistry and earth sciences, biosciences, and physics and astronomy.
Teaching is mainly in German, with English-taught master's programmes in several fields. Baden-Württemberg charges tuition fees to most non-EU international students, in addition to the semester contribution.
